Palmetto Trail Speaker at Pink Dogwood Garden Club

One of the key functions of the Pink Dogwood Garden Club in historic Summerton is to educate and inform its members about nature, horticulture, plants, flowers, birds...

The guest speaker at the January 2019 meeting was Suzette Anderson, a representative of the Palmetto Conservation Foundation. One of the primary functions of the foundation is to support, maintain and preserve Palmetto Trail in South Carolina which runs almost 500 miles across the state, from the mountains to the coast.

In recent years, the foundation has been shifting its focus from raising funds, acquiring land, and preserving history to enhancing outdoor recreation resources and activities, e.g. hiking, biking,, backpacking, camping…

Passages close to Santee and Summerton include Eutaw Springs Passage, Santee Passage, and the Lake Marion Passage. Unfortunately, the Hwy 301 lake bridge is currently closed, even to foot traffic. This could be a good community project for groups to undertake and work together to ‘fix’.

Again, if you live in Sumerton or one of the many nearby communities in the Santee Cooper Lake Country and are interested in nature, gardening, landscaping, horticulture, plants, and flowers – please consider joining the Pink Dogwood Garden Club

‘Smart’ Golfing Technologies in Santee Cooper Country

This article is all about ‘smart’ golfing technology and tools now available to the average duffer like me. You might get a kick out of what is already out there.

Those of you who have read my previous posts on Smart’ Hats, Smart’Fishing Rods, ‘Smart’Kayaks, ‘Smart’Guns, and ‘Smart’Hiking Sticks - you already know I really often don’t know what I’m talking about. I’m just not a big outdoorsman. Instead of going outside to hike, kayak, fish, golf, or hunt, I generally prefer to stay at home and interact with the many interconnected and entertaining ‘smart’ technology systems installed throughout my home.

However, on rare occasions I will still get up and go to the driving range, play 9 holes, or just try my hand on the putting green. Nowadays, whenever I get ready to go out on a golfing excursion, I first ask my ‘smart’ assistant, Alexa, to check the weather, my tee time, and display the video feed from the golf course on my big screen ‘smart’ TV, and if everything looks good I get ready to head out.

Of course the next thing I do is grab my ‘smart’ golf bag, make sure it and my ‘smart’ golf clubs, and my ‘smart’ golf balls are charged up and ready to go. Then I grab my trusty ‘smart’ hat, ‘smart’ golf gloves, smart’ glasses, ‘smart’ phone, smart’ golf watch... and finally head for the door. Since I live close to the golf course, I load everything into my solar powered self driving UAV ‘smart’ golf cart, and ensure my smart’ mini-drone is ready to launch when I get there.

Golf is a game in which a player using special clubs attempts to sink a ball with as few strokes as possible into each of the 9 or 18 successive holes on an outdoor golf course. Golf is said to have originated back in 15th century Scotland. Today’s standard 18-hole round emerged in 1764 at the Old Course at St Andrews in 1764.

Examples of ‘Smart’ Golfing Technologies & Tools

As you can see, golfing today is not like it was back in the old days when your Mom and Dad hit the links. Today, it’s all about being ‘smart’ when you go golfing. To help you get ready, the following are some recent published articles about ‘smart’ golfing technologies and tools you might want to know more about:

* Check out The Smart Golfer, Golf Digest: Golf Technology, and SportTechie: Golf Technology

The 1st generation of ‘smart’ technologies for golfers and homeowners is now there – but imagine what technologies and capabilities the next generation of ‘smart’ golfing systems will include. For example – think augmented/virtual reality (AV/VR), artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), WiFi, GPS… Think networking and interconnecting you, your golf cart, golf clubs, golf balls, and golf course, golf club services... It boggles the to think about what the game of golf will look like by 2050.

As I said before, whenever I go outside nowadays to play tennis, go kayaking, play baseball, do a little fishing, gardening… I now try to be ‘smart’ about it. What about you?
