TheTimes and Democrat Newspaper in Orangeburg, S.C., previously published an excellent series of articles on the chronology of Black History in
South Carolina. The author of the series, Richard Reid, is president
of the Orangeburg Historical and Genealogical Society.
The
series
of articles
are
about people, events, places, and the
daily lives
of
Black Americans that
have
lived within the state of South Carolina since 1670. The
four part chronology below
makes
for interesting reading. Check it
out!
- Part 1- The Arrival through the End of Slavery
- Part 2 – Reconstruction: The First Phase of Freedom
- Part 3 – The Segregation and Civil Rights Era
- Part 4 – A New Direction: 1970-2000
In addition to that series of articles on Black Americans in South Carolina, be sure to visit the Black History page on the Historic Clarendon County web site. If you have additional information or links to other sources that ought to be included on that site, please share them with us.
Finally, don't forget to also visit the HistoricSummerton, S.C. web site.
