Democratic Party 2020: An Overview and Links to Key Web Sites

The national Democratic Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States. It was founded back in 1828, making it the oldest political party in the U.S.

Politics is defined as the art or science of government. In other words, it encompasses a wide range of activities that relate to influencing the actions and policies of governments and its use of its resources.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) is responsible for overseeing and promoting Democratic campaign activities. This includes managing the process of writing the Democratic Party National Platform. The DNC also organizes and supervises the activities of the Democratic National Convention.
The South Carolina (SC) Democratic Party is the state affiliate of the national Democratic Party. It is headquartered in Columbia, S.C.

The SC Democratic Party dominated state politics from 1880 through 1948. It was the 1948 Presidential Election that marked the beginning of the winds of political change in the state when Senator Strom Thurmond broke away from the national Democratic Party and ran for office as a State's Rights Democratic Party (Dixiecrat) candidate. The shift in political climate continued with President Lyndon B. Johnson's signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This led to the current domination of the state's political landscape by the conservative Republican Party.

The Clarendon County Democratic Party is the local county affiliate of the SC Democratic Party. Within the county, there are 26 precincts.

2020 Democratic National Convention - The gathering at which delegates of the U.S. Democratic Party will officially choose the party's nominees for President and Vice President of the United States of America. The convention will be held in August 2020.

No matter what your political party affiliation, it's time to start getting ready for the next nation-wide elections. Pay attention to the candidates and their stance on the major issues facing the US. Also, check out the political platforms of both major parties.

Preliminary List of the Potential Democratic Presidential Contenders in 2020

It’s time for the Democratic Party to get serious about identifying and surfacing its top contenders for the 2020 Presidential Election. I read an article in the Washington Post entitled “The Top 15 Democratic presidential candidates for 2020” but it seemed all over the spectrum andway off base. The list contained:

#15 John Delaney, #14 Michael Avenatti, #13 Deval Patruck, #12 Hillary Clinton (Really!), #11 Amy Klobuchar, #10 Terry McAuliffe, #9 Michael Boomberg, #8 Beto O’Rourke, #7 Sherrod Brown, #6 Kirsten Gillibrand, #5 Cory Booker, #4 Joe Biden, #3 Kamala Harris, #2 Bernie Sanders, and #1 Elizabeth Warren.

Their list of honorable mentions included Eric Holder, Oprah Winfrey, Chris Murphy, Mitch Landrieu, Andrew M. Cuomo, Steve Bullock, Jason Kander, Pete Buttigieg, Eric Garcetti, Julián Castro, Tim Ryan, Tom Steyer, John Hickenlooper, Jeff Merkley, Seth Moulton, Martin O’Malley, Eric Swalwell, Jay Inslee, Howard Schultz

The Washington Post list gave me some heartburn. So here is my first prediction from out in America’s heartland of potential Democratic candidates that may have some sort of chance of actually winning. It’s a bit different than what comes out of Washington D.C.

  1. Joe Biden
  2. Michael Bloomburg
  3. Joe Manchin
  4. Bernie Sanders
  5. Elizabeth Warren

My short list of honorable mentions include Beto O’Rourke, Cory Booker, and Kamala Harris

Can you think of any other Democratic Party candidates with a real shot at winning? Let our readers know.

Major Differences Between Democrats and Republicans

Every so often, we need to revisit the following question -  “What are the major differences between the Republicans and Democrats?”  As we head into the 2016 national elections in the US, each of us ought to take a few minutes to revisit this question once again.

While Republican and Democrats have much in common, there are many differences between the two groups that primarily revolve around 'How' they choose to move the country forward and continue to keep America to be a world leader.

Take a few minutes to read some of the following articles and see where the two groups agree and where they differ:

If you took the time to scan each of the articles above, you will notice that there are many small differences in interpretation by each of these authors. The same would hold true if we were to talk to almost any group of people in the country. The differences occur because the definition of what a Democrat or Republican believes is constantly changing over time.

Get to know what the individual candidates and political parties currently believe before you cast your vote. Remember, even national elections can be won by a small handful of votes, as witnessed by the Presidential Elections of 2000 between Al Gore and George Bush.

Faith Filled Democrats

During the late 1900s, Democrats ceded the high ground amongst religious voters to the Republican Party. However, that has been steadily changing since the start of the 21st century as Democrats emerged as the party championing healthcare for all Americans, protecting Social Security and Medicare, equal rights for women, equal rights for gays, fair pay for the middle class, a living wage for the poor working class, finding a solution to the immigrant issue, addressing climate change and responsible stewardship of our planet, and so much more.

Meanwhile, Republicans have been trying to kill the Affordable Healthcare Act, cut Medicare, privatize or do away with Social Security, are aggressively fighting against gay rights, women's rights, want to wall off Mexico and Canada from the US, deport hispanic immigrants, keep wages low, reduce taxes on major corporations, keep drilling and using dirty fossil fuels, attack alternative energy solutions, continue to ignore climate change, want to get us more involved in wars across the Middle East, have told the Pope to keep quiet about the environment and world affairs, have failed to reign in spending despite controlling both houses of Congress, attacking the free press, ... The contrast between the two parties is really amazing.

It is slowly dawning on many voters that Democrats seem to be more concerned about traditional Christian values, issues and behaviour than the Republican Party. Take the time to learn more about the growing movement of 'Faithful Democrats'. You might want to check out the following web sites:

Clarendon County Democratic Party Meeting - August 2015

The Clarendon County Democratic Party is the local county affiliate of the South Carolina Democratic Party (SCDP). The local party meets the 1st Thursday of each month in Manning, S.C.

The Clarendon Democrats met this past week at Bassard’s Pond House, 4162 Rev. J.W. Carter Road in the Ram Bay community of Clarendon County. SC Senator Kevin Johnson was on hand to give a brief overview of the past legislative session and plans for the next session, e.g. Roads, domestic violence, economic development, police body-cams, healthcare. He praised the legislature for their actions related to the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the grounds of our state capitol.

A statement by SC Representative Robert Ridgeway III was then read and entered into the minutes. This was followed by a presentation emphasizing the need to build up the local parties information and communication infrastructure as we head into the 2016 election cycle. Specifically, the need to work on the Clarendon County Democatic Party Facebook page, Twitter, web site, ...

Attendees were urged to bring a friend to the next meeting. Efforts will also be made to ensure precinct representatives attend the monthly meetings whenever they can. The meeting came to a close just as a major storm rolled across the county.
