Preliminary High Level Predictions about Life in the Year 2100

I have previously written a series of articles about Technology Advancements and Life in 2050. In this article a first attempt is made to project even further into time and make predictions about life by the end of the century – Year 2100. By then we will have completed the transition from a Type 0 to a Type 1 Civilization. (Revisiting this article again during the coronavirus pandemic of 2020, the predictions seem to be right on target.)

  • A Type 0 civilization extracts its energy, information, raw-materials from crude organic-based sources, e.g. food/wood/fossil fuel/books/oral traditions; pressures via natural disaster, natural selection, and societal collapse creates extreme risk of extinction; it's capable of orbital spaceflight; societies that fail to improve social, environmental and medical understanding concurrently with other advancements, frequently accelerated their own extinction.
  • A Type I civilization extracts its energy, information, and raw-materials from fusion power, hydrogen, and other "high-density" renewable-resources; is capable of interplanetary spaceflight, interplanetary communication, megascale engineering, and interplanetary colonization, medical and technological singularity, planetary engineering, world government and trade, and stellar system-scale influence; but are still vulnerable to possible extinction.
  • A Type II civilization extracts fusion energy, information, and raw-materials from multiple solar systems; it is capable of evolutionary intervention, interstellar travel, interstellar communication, stellar engineering, and star cluster-scale influence; the resulting proliferation and diversification would theoretically negate the probability of extinction.
  • A Type III civilization extracts fusion energy, information, and raw-materials from all possible star-clusters; it's capable of intergalactic travel via wormholes and intergalactic communication, galactic engineering and galaxy-scale influence.
  • A Type IV civilization extracts energy, information, and raw-materials from all possible galaxies; it's effectively immortal and omnipotent with universal-scale influence, possessing the ability of theoretical time travel and instantaneous matter-energy transformation and teleportation, moving entire asteroid belts and stars, creating alternate timelines and more.




Predictions for the Year 2100

The following are a preliminary set of high level predictions of life in the Year 2100:

Global Population

It is predicted that the global population will be close to 12 billion by 2100, barring any unforseen major pandemic or major extinction event. Over 80% of the world’s population will live in urbanized areas where ‘Smart Cities’ will house the bulk of the world's population. Networks of metropolitan regions linked by new forms of government, transportation, communication, and economic systems. By 2100, governments around the world will be using various forms of population control, e.g. preventive medical solutions, legally approved coercion, re-engineering social norms. Agriculture

Demand for Food and Water resources will grow substantially as the global population increases substantially by the end of this century. High-tech solutions, precision farming systems, use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO), expansion of urban farming techniques… will all be needed to boost yields several times over to meet the growing global demand. Expect to see widespread use of drones, robots, artificial intelligance (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous self-driving farming vehicles, global weather control, and many other new technologies designed to meet the needs of the large scale corporate farms of the future. Today’s scarce fresh water resources will be vastly expanded by low-cost desalinization technologies that will convert sea water into potable water. Business & Manufacturing

Global standards will be in place for all sectors of the economy, e.g. technology, medicine, manufacturing, transportation, telecommunications. Use of Smart 3D Printers, Robots, Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), Advanced Manufacturing Techniques... will dramatically transform manufacturing by the end of the century. Many new and almost unimaginable ‘smart’ materials and technologies for building housing, making clothing, manufacturing cars... will be developed and put into use. Finance

A new global ‘digital’ currency and a more secure monetary system will have emerged and taken hold by the end of the century. Use of coins and paper money will be a distant memory. New and continuously evolving global financial systems will draw heavily upon the use of new technologies, e.g. Blockchain, ‘Bitcoins’, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Crowdfunding, Implantables, Sensors, Smart ‘Wallets’... Tens of thousands of bank branch offices will close and most accounting jobs will disappear. Education

Education will be free for everyone and human illiteracy will have been eliminated around the world. Access to free, continuous life-long learning opportunities will be available for all as the rate of change continues to accelerate. humans to adapt to the global economy. Many new technologies like implantable computer-brain interface technology, artificial intelligence (AI), 5G Internet, virtual and augmented reality systems, free and ‘open access’ to research and educational materials… will all play a role in revolutionizing the education system, and eliminating the cost of acquiring knowledge and becoming more productive in the future. Energy

The official end of the 'Oil Age' and use of fossil fuels on Earth will have occurred back in 2050. A range of renewable energy sources will provide 100% of the world’s energy, e.g. wind, solar, hydro, fuel cell, nuclear fusion – and maybe still a little oil and natural gas. Continent-wide ‘smart supergrids' will be used to help manage the world's energy needs. Both the high cost and scarcity of energy on Earth will be a thing of the past. Roofs, windows, painted surfaces, clothes… will all be used to collect energy for home and office devices, with excess unused energy being fed into the country’s smart supergrid. Environment

Average global temperatures will have risen by more than 5°F by 2100. Ongoing climate change will make storms far more intense around the world, e.g. hurricanes, tornados, cyclones, monsoons. Sea levels across the globe will rise by a little over 3 feet, flooding many coastal areas around the world. Major extinctions of many animals and plant life will have occurred. For example, deep ocean mining operations around the world will become widespread further disrupting sea life. Nearly half of the rain forests and jungles in the world today will have vanished, but global efforts to halt de-forestation, clean up the seas, restore coral reefs… will have finally taken hold. Health

The rise of 'Regenerative Medicine', Genetic Engineering, Stem Cell Research, and the development of 'Human Augmentation' technologies will dramatically alter people's health for the better over this next century. New technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), and the Invisible User Interface (IUI) will all be incorporated into Health 4.0 systems of the future. Use of DNA biorepositories and genomic information systems will further transform healthcare, help lower costs, combat diseases, reduce child mortality, and extend human lifespans to well over 100 years. Look to see the emergence of a new health industry focused on BioEngineering human organs and new lifeforms and dealing with recurring global pandemics. Technology

There will be more than a 1,000-fold increase in computer processing power, data collection and storage, information analysis and dissemination... By the year 2100, there will be widespread use of robots, drones, virtual reality, smart appliances, 5G Internet, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), nano-bots, brain-computer interfaces (BCI), unmanned autonomous vehicles (UAV), 3-D printers, Quantum Computers, Invisible User Interface (IUI), teleportation, and many other technologies in every industries, e.g. agriculture, manufacturing, military, government, transportation… Wearable and implantable technologies, not to mention teleportation and telepathy systems, will also be widely used in all facets of daily life,, e.g. healthcare, education, security, ... Transportation

Electric and Hydrogen Fuel Cell powered vehicles will have long since replaced fossil fuel powered vehicles. Hi-tech unmanned autonompus vehicles (UAV) will be the dominant form of transportation with very few people owning their own cars. High speed Maglev trains and Hyperloop systems will be completed between major cities across the U.S. and around the world. These will all have a dramatic impact on the trucking and airplane industries as we currently know them. Finally, the commercial space transportation industry will continue to grow and evolve as mankind begins to colonize outer space.  Read Future of Transportation

Government & Society

The vast majority of countries will have adopted some form of democratic government. New alliances and partnerships between countries will lead to reinventing regional and global governance systems. Many non-state actors will take the lead from governments in confronting major global challenges, e.g. climate, pollution, healthcare… Building leadership in government and business that can be 'trusted', that is not corrupt, is citizen-centered, and not built on greed and the quest for money and power... will continue to be a major challenge for society to achieve.

By the end of the 21st century, real time language translation technology will greatly improve global communications between individuals and organizations around the world. There will be continued progress towards the eradication illiteracy and global poverty levels. Women will have assumed a significantly growing role in public and private sector organizations across the world. Racial, religious, and gender discrimination and intolerance will have also been largely eradicated in the US and many other parts of the world. Finally, each individual will receive some guaranteed form of Universal Basic Income (UBI) from government which will meet the minimum requirements to sustain their lives, especially when changing jobs or looking for new work. Military & Warfare

It will be highly unlikely that war will go extinct, though its frequency, nature, and scope will continue to change and adapt to the future we will inhabit. Many wars will be fought in the ‘virtual world’. It is expected that rapid changes and shifts in ‘power’ may ultimately lead to more smaller intra-state and inter-state conflicts around the globe.

There will be widespread use of new technologies in weapon systems, e.g. Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles (UAV), artificial intelligence (AI), laser weapons, drones, robots, human augmentation technology, teleportation, telepathy... Also, expect to see the use of military weapons and warfare spreading to outer space as the quest to colonize the moon and other planets across our solar system becomes a reality. Space Travel & Colonization

Spaceflight technology will have taken a major leap forward allowing for Inter-Planetary travel. Millions of humans will make up the first wave of immigrants populating permanent colonies on other planets and moons in our Solar System. Large scale geoengineering construction in support of these steadily growing colonies will have begun. Public and private sector organizations will be aggressively moving forward to further explore and exploit resources on nearby planets, moons, and asteroids in outer-space well into the 22nd century. Conclusion

We are in the midst of the transition from the ‘Industrial Age’ of the 20th century into the ‘Information Age’ of the 21st century. We are also in the midst of the transition from a Type 0 Civilization into a Type 1 Civilization. It’s an amazing time to be living and the world is in some turmoil as it struggles to deal with these momentous transitions. To help people deal with the rapid pace of change all around the, this article attempts to paint a preliminary picture of the future to help make some sense of the seeming chaotic times we are living through. The 'Open' Education & Training Revolution Continues to Spread

First came free and 'open' source software. Then along came 'Open Access', 'Open' Data, 'Open' Standards, 'Open' IT Architecture, 'Open' Hardware, 'Open' Communities, 'Open' Government, 'Open' Education, and …  The 'Open' Movement continues to spread disrupting almost every industry.  The 'Open' Revolution is a rapidly spreading 21st century global phenomenon.
 
This article focuses on some of the major disruptive changes occurring related to the field of 'Open Education & Training, in both the public and private sector. These include everything from 'open access' journals and textbooks to 'open source' education and training software - and the latest phenomena, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC).  Pay attention South Carolina!
 
Background
 
The number and quality of free and 'open source' education and training software products out there continues to grow. Have you checked some of them out? They are aimed at students, teachers, and public and private sector education and training organizations.  Have you heard of Sakai, Kuali, Kaltura, Moodle,  or Zotero? Check out some of the better products now available – go to the COSI Open Education web site.
 
You might also want to check out some of the many sources of high quality, free and 'open access' journals and textbooks available on the web. Do you know about Bentham Open Access, OER Commons, Versita Open, or the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)? Check out these and many of the other 'Open Access' Education resources.
 
Then there are Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) web sites that offer low cost, online courses aimed at nearly unlimited levels of participation by students or trainees around the globe. In addition to using traditional course materials (e.g. textbooks, videos), MOOCs also provide interactive user forums that help build a community for the students, professors, and instructors. MOOCs are a relatively recent development in distance education.
 
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) emerged from the open educational resources (OER) movement. The term MOOC was first coined in 2008 by Dave Cormier of the University of Prince Edward Island and Senior Research Fellow Bryan Alexander of the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education in Canada. While MOOCs initially emerged and were used in academic settings, many private corporations around the world have begun to embrace them as a new, cost effective alternative for providing training to their employees.
 
Major Examples of 'Open' Education & Training Solutions
 
The following are brief profiles of some of the more notable Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platforms that are currently available:
 
edX  is a non-profit collaborative organization and web portal offering interactive Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) in subjects such as law, history, science, engineering, business, social sciences, computer science, public health, and more. Their decision to release their source code to the community was made to further accelerate enhancements to the platform.
Coursera  is an education company that has partnered with top universities and organizations around the world to offer free courses online for anyone to take. Coursera enables its partners to offer their courses to millions of students. It has emerged as the current leader of the pack, with over 10 million enrollments in Coursera from approximately 195 countries.
Udacity  is a for-profit education and training organization offering Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC). Their mission is to help reinvent education for the 21st century by bridging the gap between real-world skills, relevant education, and employment.
Udemy  is another for-profit education and raining company helping its students make career moves – whether it be getting a promotion, breaking into a new industry, starting a company, or furthering a passion.
 
Other MOOC platforms to check out include Academic Earth, FutureLearn, OER University, OpenCurriculum, and YouTube EDU.
 
Corporate Training & MOOCs 
 
Massively Open Online Courses (MOOC) are starting to impact corporate education and training programs. One of the most obvious benefits of making world-class academic and corporate educational experiences available online is the opportunity to lower training costs.
 
For example, a one day training program for 100 employees at a remote site could easily cost an organization well over $100,000 to hold.  Use of MOOCs allow the costs of developing course content and delivery of training to be amortized over thousands of company employees taking self-paced training sessions – with no major travel, facility, or equipment expenses required.
 
Many of today's knowledge workers are 'always on', expecting to access information and training anywhere, anytime – as needed.  MOOCs are ideally suited to these workers of the future. There is an excellent article posted on Wired.com entitled MOOCs On The Move From Colleges To Companies that is well worth reading and goes into the topic of MOOCs  in much more detail.
 
The article notes that major corporations around the world are adding online courses to their new 'blended learning' training programs with increasing success.  It also states that "Online access to company training courses is making it possible for corporate employees outside of headquarters to have the same opportunity for management training and promotion as their HQ peers; for foreign contractors to perform at the same level as their local peers; and for small companies to provide the same level and frequency of training to their employees as their larger competitors. "
 
An increasing number of corporate Human Resource (HR) management  officials are giving MOOCs a closer look as a new, more cost effective way to deliver training to employees. After trying it out, many early adopters have warming to the idea and are sharing their 'lessons learned' from their pilot initiatives with others.
 
Major Issues & Challenges
 
MOOCs are a relatively new phenomena. As they continue to catch on and gather momentum, resistance to them is increasing. There are numerous obstacles to overcome in the coming years before MOOCs find their place, as the field of education and training rapidly changes to meet the challenges of the 21st century 'Information Age'.
 
Some of the many challenges and issues that must be addressed include:
• Helping people overcome their fear of change and adjust to the new technologies and solutions – whether they be faculty, students, management, employees, young, or old.
• Helping facilitate radical change in how academic institutions and corporations currently offer education and training
• Changing outdated legislation or policies that favor the status quo – traditional classroom training offered by 'brick and mortar' institutions
• Continue to recognize and facilitate the move towards lifelong learning – offered to anyone, anywhere, anytime
• Continue the move towards the privatization of education and training at all levels – high school, college, on-the-job, etc.
• Continue to enhance the technologies and processes needed to provide high quality, online distance learning solutions
• Continue to make changes to current education and training programs and practices – college degrees programs vs. certification programs; obtaining accreditation for online courses; …
• Address the many privacy and security issues raised as we move towards use of many new technologies and more online education & training programs
• Explore and create new revenue opportunities for academic institutions, faculty, and private corporations providing education and training to people around the world.

 
Conclusions
 
Bottom Line - Traditional educational institutions are going to change dramatically over the coming years – investing more heavily in new technologies; increasingly going online; going after corporate customers; thinking global; offering certificates in addition to degrees; using open access textbooks; cutting costs while simultaneously offering more services; reducing academic staff; learning to be more flexible and 'open' minded…
 
Corporate training program will continue to evolve and outsource much of their training – the difference being that they will increasing make use of low cost, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) offerings by public and private sector organizations.  Some of the larger corporations will  stand up their own MOOC systems – using some of the many high quality 'open source' software tools now available, as well as using 'open access' textbooks and raining materials. They may even generate revenue by offering training to others outside their own organization.
 
Globalization, international competitiveness, and the growth of the knowledge-based industries of the 21st century will drive the growth of MOOCs. India has already grabbed the #2 spot in use of MOOCs, after the U.S.  Expect Europe, China, and a growing number of other countries to quickly take advantage of MOOCs as they compete in the global marketplace.

The World in 2050


What will our world look like in 2050? Not just here in Summerton, but in Clarendon County, across the U.S. and around the world. The following is a brief collection of both negative and positive predictions about our world in 2050. These predictions were extracted from multiple reports and studies by groups around the world focused on the future of America and this planet. You may find that they all point to redefining society and life on Earth as we transition from a Type 0 to a Type 1 Civilization.

So here we go! Here are just a few of the major predictions about our future come 2050. As you read these predictions about the future, think about how they might relate to life in Summerton - or in your town:

Agriculture
  • Demand for Food and Water resources will grow substantially as the global population increases. Unfortunately, much of the world's fish stocks in the ocean could become extinct by 2050 and global yields of food crops could also plummet nearly 10% by 2050 leading to food scarcity
  •  High-tech solutions, precision farming systems, as well as approaches borrowed from organic farming, will all be needed to boost yields several times over to meet the growing global demand. Expect to see widespread use of drones, autonomous self-driving farming vehicles, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) or crops, and 'open' farming machinery - see Open Ecology.
Business & Manufacturing
  • Collaboration, 'Open' Solutions, Sharing, and a focus on continuous Innovation will be the key business strategies pursued by most industries. Many new materials for housing, clothing, technology ... will be developed and used to revolutionize many industries and the products they produce. See 4th Industrial Revolution
  • Hi-tech, intelligent buildings powered by alternative energy sources will be used by most growing and forward-thinking companies. Use of Smart 3D Printers and Advanced Manufacturing Techniques will transform manufacturing and be the norm. The telecommuting workforce across the U.S. and around the world will continue to grow, and the market for the Internet of Things (IoT) will be huge - consisting of trillions of interconnected devices of all sorts.
Education
  • Continuous life-long learning needed by all humans to adapt to the global economy. Human illiteracy will be largely eliminated around the world. Fully accredited cost-competitive private, online schools and universities will dominate the education landscape by 2050 - Think MOOCs!
  • Free and open access to most of the world's digitized information will be available to almost everyone in the world. Use of 'open access' textbooks and research, coupled with the spread of 'open data', will revolutionize the education system and help to dramatically lower costs. Energy

Environment

  • Nearly half of the world's rain forests and jungles will vanish by 2050, and approximately 5 billion of the world's projected 10 billion people will live in water-stressed areas. Wildfires will triple in many regions of the globe, deep ocean mining operations will become widespread further destroying sea life, and major extinctions of many animals and plant life will have occurred by 2050.
Global Economy & Trade
  • The U.S. dollar will lose its global dominance by 2025 as the Euro and China's currency become co-equals in a "multi-currency" monetary system. India's economy will finally rival that of China and the U.S. by 2050, and Brazil, Mexico and Indonesia will finally begin to rival the economies of the U.K. and France.
  • Collaboration, 'Open' Solutions, and continuous Innovation will be the key strategies for success in the 21st century global economy. New financial systems, economic development, business models and tools will have emerged, e.g. Bitcoin, Micro-financing, Electronic Wallets.
Government
  • The vast majority of countries will have adopted some form of democratic government by 2050, and the U.S. will learn to work with more closely with new partners around the world to reinvent regional and global governance systems.
  • Both Public and Private sector organizations will shift their focus to long term investments and solutions. Governments will have to learn to adapt fast enough to harness change and new technologies, instead of being overwhelmed by it. Many Non-State actors will take the lead in confronting global challenges, e.g. global business conglomerates.
  • Building leadership in government and business that can be 'trusted', that is not corrupt, is citizen-centered, and not built on greed and the quest for money and power... will continue to be a major challenge for society.
Health
  • Skyrocketing global population will spur the faster spread of infectious diseases and viruses. By 2050 we will see more instances of global pandemics and the spread of deadly diseases. Read Health 4.0 by 2040
  • Rise of 'Regenerative Medicine', Genetic Engineering, Stem Cell Research, and the development of 'Human Augmentation' technologies will dramatically alter people's life spans and capabilities.
  • Use of genomic information and biorepository systems will transform healthcare and help dramatically lower costs.
  • Reduction in child mortality and improvements in health due to numerous advances in medicine. Genetically engineered "designer babies" will become more commonplace
Military &Warfare
  • Unfortunately, war will not become extinct, though its frequency and scope will continue to change and adapt to rapid shifts in power and events on the global stage. Global power will shift to networks and coalitions of nations in a multi-polar world.
  • Development of a wide range of new weapon systems will continue - see Future Weapons. There will be more widespread use of fully autonomous, semi-intelligent military weapons, e.g. drones, robots.
  • Expect to see weapons and warfare spread to outer space as the quest to colonize the moon and other planets becomes a reality.
Population
  • It is predicted that the global population will reach a plateau of approximately10 billion by 2050, barring any unforeseen major pandemic or major extinction event.
  • By 2050, one in every six people on earth will be over 65 years old, and over 60% of the world’s population will live in urbanized areas and smart cities of the future.
  • Mass migration of the world's populations effected by climate change will increase.
  • The U.S. will continue to see steady population growth through 2050, with the Southern and Western regions of the country leading the growth
Society
  • The importance of Personal Privacy will remain a high priority for people everywhere as business and government continue to infringe on this area of life.
  • Women will take on a growing leadership role in business and government around the world.
  • By 2050, it is predicted that 30 per cent (2.8 billion) of the World's population will identify with Islam compared to 31 per cent (2.9 billion) identifying as Christian.
Space Travel & Colonization
  • Spaceflight technology will take a major leap forward allowing for Inter-Planetary travel. Public and private sector organizations will be aggressively moving forward to explore and exploit resources on nearby planets in outer-space. There will be permanent human settlements on the moon, followed by the first permanent colony on Mars.
  • Different life forms will begin to be discovered on other planets and galaxies by 2050.
Technology
  • The pace of technological innovation will continue to increase. There will be another 1,000-fold increase in computer power, data transmission rates, storage, ... Mobile solutions will rapidly evolve, especially as the world embraces a wide range of wearable technologies. Implantable technologies will start to gain widespread acceptance in healthcare, warfare, and other sectors of our lives by 2050.
  • Trillions of 'Internet of Things (IoT)' and Smart Appliances will be deployed and interconnected. Use of 3D printing technology by individuals and manufacturing industries will become widespread. Drones will be employed by many industries, e.g. agriculture, manufacturing... Robots will become a common feature in homes and workplaces around the world.
  • Hopefully, many other new technological breakthroughs will be developed just in time to boost economic productivity and solve many of the challenges related to a growing world population, rapid urbanization, climate change, ...
Transportation
  • Electric cars will largely dominate the automobile industry by 2050. In addition, hi-tech self-driving cars and trucks on the road will be commonplace.
  • Look for completion of high-speed rail routes between major cities across the U.S. and around the world, e.g. Maglev and HyperLoop systems. A trans-global highway and rail network will have emerged that will eventually link all continents.
  • The commercial space transportation industry will continue to grow far into the foreseeable future.
The rate of change will not be slowing down. It will continue to increase and amaze us. The U.S. and the rest of the developing world will learn to adapt to these many new technologies and changing scenarios as we continue the transition from a Type 0 to a Type 1 Civilization.




Focusing on Summerton & Clarendon County in 2050



So what does all this mean for the citizens of Summerton and Clarendon County, S.C. Let's take a quick look at some probable changes and scenarios we can expect to see in our future.  Be sure to also read the Clarendon County Comprehensive Plan 2018-2028

Demographics

Population
Conservatively speaking, the population of Summerton and the surrounding area should more than double by 2050. That means Summerton's population may slowly but steadily grow to over 2,000 residents and Clarendon County may grow to over 60,000 people by 2050.

Education & Training
The education and qualifications of the local workforce will have a direct impact on the ability of the area to attract new industry and businesses. Improving the level of education will be a high priority for the community. By 2050, every person will have at least a high school education. At least 50% will have 2-year community college or 4-year university degrees – a necessity if they are to compete in the global marketplace.

The means of delivering education and life-long training to citizens will change dramatically. For example, consolidation of small school districts will occur to cut administrative overhead, save money, and improve the range of educational services provided. Privatization of higher education systems by for-profit universities will rival or replace state-run schools supported by tax dollars. Income & Jobs
In 2050, people will still continue to work in the following fields - Agriculture, Forestry, Manufacturing, Construction, Transportation, Finance, Education, Retail Trade, Hospitality Services, Food Service, Tourism, Healthcare, and Public Services. However, expect to see a significant shift in the percentage of people working in each of these industries.

By 2050, many new workers will be needed to work in the rapidly expanding information and technology industry. Many new jobs will open in the hospitality, food service, entertainment, tourism, and outdoor recreation industries. Expect to see significant growth in ecotourism, agritourism, water parks, miniature golf courses, marinas, hotels, condos, new homes, restaurants, retail businesses, new homes, retirement communities, and much more.

Along with the new industries will come many new jobs – many of which will be higher paying jobs requiring a more complex set of skills. Thus the need for improvements in the local education and training programs.

Housing
By 2050, as the population doubles in the area, the education standard is raised, and higher paying jobs in new industries become the norm, expect to see a boom in the housing market and construction industry. Many existing summer homes will be upgraded to year round homes. Expect to see more construction of high-end condos and townhouse communities along the lake. More secure, gated communities will spring up to accommodate retirees from other parts of the country. Many of these new homes will be better constructed 'smart homes' incorporating solar power and other hi-tech features. Skilled workers will need to be trained to build these new homes.


Expect the prices for these new homes, lake-front property, and land in general to climb dramatically over the coming decades. It's not going to happen overnight. Think long term – think 2050. Key to the growth is Lake Marion, our weather, and the geographic position of Summerton and the surrounding area halfway between Columbia and Charleston, S.C.

Local GovernmentThe Public Sector

The mayor and town council of Summerton are going to face some major new challenges in the coming decade. By 2050, the number of residents and businesses in Summerton and the surrounding area will more than double. The town will need to refine the 'Comprehensive Plan' for Summerton to include new infrastructure that will be needed, online information systems, updated town ordinances, zoning, town boundries, taxes, new services, utilities, additional staffing, and much more.

Once the pace of change begins to pick up, to succeed the town will need to consider hiring a professional town manager who will need to work with the Clarendon County government, Santee-Lynches Regional Council of Governments, and the State and Federal governments to obtain grants and participate on more intergovernmental initiatives. By 2020, there will begin to be many additional governmental functions that only a full time town manager and professional staff will be capable of handling.

The town will need to start focusing on many potential new local and intergovernmental initiatives such as: improving the education system; providing additional public health and healthcare services; establishing a public relations and marketing programs to attract developers and new industries; raising additional revenue; bolstering disaster preparedness and public safety programs; building up tourism, agribusiness, tackling environmental issues, providing more online government services, and much more.

Local BusinessThe Private Sector

The number of businesses in Summerton can expect to grow from approximately 80 small businesses today to more than 150 by 2050. The number and type of businesses will include many traditional businesses, e.g. realty, insurance, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, banks, retail stores. Now - think about telecommuting centers, information technology companies, ecotourism companies, assisted living centers, family recreation facilities, alternative energy system, the Internet of Things (IoT), construction of 'smart homes', farms planting genetically modified organisms (GMO); precision farming; drone operators; … Many of these new businesses will require more a more educated workforce with hi-tech skills. Non-Profit Community Organizations

As the population grows and becomes more diverse, non-government organizations (NGO) like churches, charities, civic groups, and veterans organizations will not only see an increase in their members – but many new organizations will emerge to serve the changing population.

Think of more proactive environmental groups, new religious organizations, increased activity by historic preservation groups, the need for more charitable services, the rise of home owner associations (HOA), more social groups...

Like the government and local businesses, the use of information technology (IT) to run their operations and reach out to their members will be of great importance. Think computers, telecommunication networks, video conferencing systems, social networking, mobile solutions, and… Notice how it all comes back to education, training, and technology for the organizations and workforce of the future.

Summerton is known as a wonderful place to vacation, raise a family, run a business - or simply retire to, when all is said and done. The deep spiritual commitment and sound family values of its people are reflected in the many churches and close-knit residential communities in Summerton and the surrounding area. However, the town of Summerton is now caught up in the transition from its deeply rooted agrarian past into the modern 'Information Age' of the 21st Century.

Change is going to continue to come to Summerton and the surrounding area. There is really no stopping it. So rather than fighting it, the community needs to embrace it and be more proactive in shaping its future – rather than letting 'outside forces' dictate what's going to happen. But you know what? It turns out that Summerton is well positioned to thrive in this coming century.
